Gloria Steinham, Meet my Grandmother - Nelle
Updated: 2 hours ago
Long before Women's Rights Movement. Well before the protests, the marches, Roe B. Wade, Ruth Gingrich, Gloria Steinham there were women who paved the way and went unrecognized. Such was my grandmother. Born one of thirteen at the turn of the century. On a farm in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. She was raised Roman Catholic. Once married she came to the discovery that her husband was a "tow-timer" as they were called back then. The vows of marriage and the restrictions stemming from her faith gave her no options but to remain married.
Such was the plight of women. For you see that it was the convenant of marriage was in fact repression. Woman for decades, even centuries were assigned the role of gatherers subject to men's dominance. Of course we all know that behind the scenes, once the doors were closed women had power of influence. But publically they were second hand citizens with no rights to own property or any sense of independence or identily. Even given the right to vote in 19__ they often were subject to vote as their husbands did.
Nelle, my grandmother was a pioneer in women's rights. You wont find her in any history books. But were it not for her and thousands of other women who were just not going "to take it anymore" is the foundation of what we now experience. Freedom from oppresion and near equal rights. We have a ways to go. But I know my grandmother is looking out for us all.
